BMW ‘Miracle Brake’ Problem Faces Massive Recall

BMW Miracle Brake – Interference signs turn a new braking system into a catastrophe for BMW. The manufacturer is identifying 1.5 million automobiles or not producing them. Yet, the technology stays safe, you only have to brake differently than expected.

Due to issues with a braking method, the Munich-based car manufactory BMW is identifying vehicles worldwide or preventing their delivery. A capacity of over 1.5 million automobiles is concerned, the company reported on Tuesday. As a consequence, BMW modified its profit projection for the present year: profits before taxes will fall “quite” this year. The firm also noted weak demand for its automobiles in China as a basis.

The technical situation involves Continental’s Integrated Braking System (IBS), which may not be functioning properly and thus needs to be reviewed. The design, called MK C2, is sold as “brake-by-wire” because the brakes are now controlled automatically. Contemporary technology is deemed efficient and lowers emissions, and Formula 1 has counted on it for years. Nevertheless, it is always new in street traffic. For safety explanations, the Conti system even includes a hydraulically governed fallback level, as directed by law.

Nevertheless, internal quality reviews have indicated that “in very rare cases” signal defects can appear in the electronic component. In any case, the braking arrangement remains as powerful as needed by law. However, the mark can indicate that the brake pedal has to be pushed harder than normal. In expansion, the emergency procedures DSC (dynamic stability control) and ABS (anti-lock braking system) can fail. Drivers are notified via brake caution lights and a statement on the central screen and are requested to drive carefully and to see an approved workshop.

So far, no casualties have been conveyed that could be attributed to the mistake, a BMW representative informed SPIEGEL. Because safety-relevant positions are concerned, the group voluntarily determined to identify the product in February. At the moment, fewer than 400,000 automobiles worldwide were spoken to be exposed to the error. However, it has since appeared that the annoyance can also occur “beyond the limits at the moment.” A large balance of the new cars were traded in China.

According to BMW, multiple models produced between June 2022 and August 2024 are potentially involved: from the Mini Cooper and Countryman to the different series of BMW 2 Series, X1, X2, X5, X6, X7, XM, 5 Series, 7 Series, and the Rolls-Royce Spectre. About 1.2 million of these have been provided to clients. Around 320,000 automobiles are still with the factory and cannot be returned for the time being. This will exhaust deals in the second half of the year, BMW presented. Additional costs “in the elevated three-digit million range” are to be anticipated in the third quarter.

Production Problems in Hungary?

In the involved cars, remotely established diagnostic software can catch the mistake, which then has to be restored in a workshop. Some of these automobiles have already been provided with this software. In some governments, yet, the vehicles can only be returned if the brake module has been returned, according to BMW. The purpose is to discourage electronic communications from shipping an interference sign into the system.
