Washington — Two Russian citizens performing for a news network owned by Vladimir Putin’s administration directed millions of dollars to an American media group that produced right-wing influencers for videos compelling narratives evident to the Kremlin, on Wednesday U.S. prosecutors alleged.
A charge unsealed in the Southern District of New York assessed Elena Afanasyeva and Kostiantyn Kalashnikov, both established in Moscow, with a scheme to launder funds and a scheme to break the Foreign Agents Registration Act. The accusation was reached as the Justice Department revealed sprawling allegations blaming the Russian state for meddling in U.S. elections in 2024.
The two defendants performed for RT. A media platform previously known as Russia Today that is supported and maintained by the Russian state, the charge said.
Federal prosecutors told RT oversaw a succession of “covert projects” that contained funneling $10 million via a string of shell commodities to a Tennessee-based organization founded in 2023 that broadcasts videos on Instagram, YouTube, X, and TikTok, previously known as Twitter.
“Many of the videos broadcasted by U.S. Company-1 include commentary on occasions and problems in the United States. Like inflation, immigration, and other issues related to trained and unfamiliar policy,” the charge said.
