80mph Gusts Expected as Storm Lilian Hits the UK

Storm Lilian – the 12th called hurricane of the season – will be getting gales and serious rain to regions of the UK on Friday.

Yellow weather alerts for breeze and rain have been published by the Met Office as there may be trouble to travel, possible for trees to come down, or injury to structures.

Conditions are then predicted to quieten down for the bank holiday weekend.

Storm Lilian

The hurricane will bring a place of intense winds across northern England with blows widely from 50 to 60mph.

There’s even a possibility of some severe winds gusting up to 80mph and a Met Office yellow alert for current has been given for 05:00 BST to 11:00 BST on Friday.

It particularly mentions potential situations for drivers on the M6, A66, and A1(M).

Heavy rain will even extend eastwards with the possibility of some localized flooding.

There are two different yellow weather alerts for rain in eastern Scotland and southwest Scotland during the Friday night.

There could be up to 30mm of precipitation in some locations, the Met Office says – with the beach of Aberdeenshire and Angus predicted to see around half a month’s precipitation by Friday morning.

Summer Storms

Named hurricanes in August don’t occur that often.

Since we began naming storms in 2015/2016 there have just been two years when we’ve had called storms.

Last year we had showers Antoni and Betty brought some trouble.

There were Ellen and Francis in 2020.

The magic of wetter and windier climates, however, isn’t too unusual for late August.

While some are even on summer holidays we are running ever nearer to autumn which meteorologically begins on 1 September.

At this period of the year, the jet brook – fast currents high in the ambiance. It can pick up the pace and direct Atlantic weather approaches towards the UK.

What is the Jet Stream?

Getting near the height of the storm season. It can also can obtain the possibility for ex-hurricanes to get caught up in the jet stream.

On Wednesday evening the remains of ex-hurricane Ernesto obtained strong currents and heavy rain to parts of the UK.

Lilian is the 12th called shower this season and this is the foremost time. We’ve called the letter ‘L’ since we began naming storms.

Bank Holiday Weather

After Storm Lilian parts there are some modifications in the temperature for the bank vacation weekend.

There will still be some periods of rain and storms at times but throughout the entire weekend, there will be a bunch of dry weather with some sunlight.

Temperatures are possible to remain slightly below standard for the time of year and it’ll always be quite windy at times.
